The proposed U.S.-Panama FTA is a comprehensive agreement. Some 88% of U.S. commercial and industrial exports would become duty-free upon implementation, with remaining tariffs phased out over a ten-year period. Over 60% of U.S. farms exports to Panama also would achieve immediate duty-free status, with tariffs and tariff rate quotas (TRQs) on select farm products to be phased out by year 17 of the agreement.
ASU partners with Smithsonian Institute for Panama research

NEW PARTNERS: Robert Page is the director of a new program created by the recent partnering of ASU and the Smithsonian Institute. This new program will allow students to participate in fieldwork.
Students and faculty members now have the chance to conduct research in Panama through a new partnership with the Smithsonian Institute.

The Manatee Port Authority approved the purchase of Port Manatee’s second mobile harbor container crane.
The $4 million crane boosts the port’s container-handling ability and will facilitate adding more containerized services, a release said.

Cancun, Mexico – Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Monday opened a two-day summit of Latin American and Caribbean nations that is expected to explore the creation of a new regional bloc. In the presence of 24 country leaders at the Grand Velas Hotel on the Mayan Riviera, some 60 kilometres south of Mexican resort city Cancun, Calderon called for the “union of Latin American and Caribbean nations for development, freedom, justice and democracy.”
